The combination of soloist, conductor, and orchestra is identified along with the repertoire in the edition's information.
Musical genre: Classical music.
Tracklist
- Side 1: Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466.
- Side 2: Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467.
The first side features Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, and the second side features Concerto No. 21 in C major. The numbers K. 466 and K. 467 are the Köchel catalogue references that distinguish these two works. The transition from a minor to a major key immediately highlights the tonal contrast between the pieces, preventing confusion with other piano concertos by the composer. The program's organization across both sides makes it easy to locate each concerto and follow the order indicated on the disc.
The repertoire is performed by the same group of musicians on both sides: Gulda as soloist, Abbado conducting, and the Vienna Philharmonic as the orchestra. Deutsche Grammophon recorded this same ensemble for concertos K. 466 and K. 467, allowing for comparison of the credits and works. This information, however, refers to the Círculo de Lectores silver edition, catalog number 52050, not a Deutsche Grammophon edition.
About Friedrich Gulda
Friedrich Gulda (1930–2000) was an Austrian pianist born in Vienna. He studied there and began his concert career in 1946, after gaining recognition at the Geneva International Music Competition. His repertoire encompassed both classical and jazz; Austrian musical sources and Deutsche Grammophon particularly highlight his interpretations of Mozart and Beethoven. This trajectory helps to situate the performer on this LP within the pianistic tradition and explains the presence of Mozart in his discography.
