Schubert-Online lists D 840 as a piano sonata in C major, dated 1825, and describes the surviving manuscript as incomplete. The back cover of this CD, however, presents the four tracks transcribed above; we have retained them as they appear in the edition, without reinterpreting or adding to the repertoire. The work is also listed under the pseudonym "Reliquie" in the manuscript catalog.
This is a classical music edition focused on a single piano work and Richter's interpretation, not a compilation of pieces by various composers. The edition number, the collection name, the code D 840, and the printed duration allow you to identify this release among the classical piano CDs and Círculo de Lectores publications.
Richter was born in 1915 in what is now Ukraine and was largely self-taught in his early years. Deutsche Grammophon notes that at the age of fifteen, he worked as an accompanist at the Odessa Opera House; later, he began formal studies with Heinrich Neuhaus. His first concert in Western Europe took place in Helsinki in 1960. This information helps to contextualize the LP's performance without attributing an unverified sonic assessment to the recording.
